What is SAL? (abbreviation of Surface Air Lifted)
As Freight forwarder, Japan Post pre-buys large blocks of cargo space on airplanes, so if there is vacant space in cargo space bought in advance, it is not cost-effectively. So they provide SAL, as inexpensive international airmail services. Because of using vacant space, please note that it may take more longer transportation time. Moreover, Japan Post says that [This is a service where international mail is handled as surface mail in both Japan and the destination country and as airmail between the two countries.]
