About Murasaki Shikibu
Though there is a heresy that is Kyoko Fujiwara about her real name, Murasaki Shikibu (979?-1016?. ) who wrote The Tale of Genji, was born as a daughter of a nobleman, whose name is Tametoki Fujiwara, and her father's name indicates that her familly is a member of Royal family. She married with Nobutaka Fujiwara at the end of 10th century, then she gave birth to a daughter, whose name is Kataiko Fujiwara. But, her husband died shortly after they married, then she served Emperor's wife as a tutor. Needless to say, Murasaki Shibu is a pen name, and it is certain that she firstly used a pen name in Japan. In spite of many efforts by Japanese scholars, there is no more information about Murasaki Shibu.

By the way, there was very few recreation at those days, and that is the theme of this folding fan. Maybe two ladies are playing a game like you see at left, so it would be a very rare folding fan for home decor.
