About Murasaki Shikibu
Though there is a
heresy that is Kyoko Fujiwara about her real
name, Murasaki Shikibu (979?-1016?. ) who wrote
The Tale of Genji, was born as a daughter of a
nobleman, whose name is Tametoki Fujiwara, and
her father's name indicates that her familly is a
member of Royal family. She married with Nobutaka
Fujiwara at the end of 10th century, then she
gave birth to a daughter, whose name is Kataiko
Fujiwara. But, her husband died shortly after
they married, then she served Emperor's wife as a
tutor. Needless to say, Murasaki Shibu is a pen
name, and it is certain that she firstly used a
pen name in Japan. In spite of many efforts by
Japanese scholars, there is no more information
about Murasaki Shibu.By
the way, there was very few recreation at those
days, and that is the theme of this folding fan.
Maybe two ladies are playing a game like you see
at left, so it would be a very rare folding fan
for home decor.
