| The theme of this tapestry is Ukiyo-e
by Utagawa Toyokuni. As a matter of fact, the name of
Utagawa Toyokuni never means a name of one Ukiyo-e artist
the name of Utagawa Toyokuni is a kind of symbol name
among Utagawa school in Ukiyoe art. The first "Utagawa
Toyokuni" (1769-1825) was one of the heads of so-called
Utagwa school, and one of his pupil declared himself as
the name of Utagawa Toyokuni with agreement by other
pupils after his death, and six men continuously declared
himself as Utagawa Toyokuni until now. Please note that
name of "Utagawa Toyokuni" means the first
"Utagawa Toyokuni" in the usual case, and a man
is getting recognition that he is the sixth "Utagawa
Toyokuni" (1906 - ?) in present Japan. Though it
would be difficult to understand, there is the same
phenomenon in Kabuki and Rakugo. |
